Wingo, a native of Hamtramck, Mich., lettered three years on Wayne State's men's track and field team. During his three year career, Wingo set many records and earned NCAA All-American honors. Wingo earned varsity letters in men's track and field in 1947, 1949 and 1950. He was best known as the lead off runner on Wayne State's 440 yard and 800 relay teams that set records at the prestigious 1949 Penn Relays in Pennsylvania. With Wingo's help the 440 yard relay team set a record with a 41.7 time, as the 880 yard relay team set a record with a 1:26.00 time - which was one second shy of the world record. In addition, Wingo was part of the WSU team that set a Canadian National record in the 880 yard relay with a 1:26.70 time in 1951. Wingo was not just known for his excellence on the relay team. He also held the Tartar record in the 50 yard low hurdles. In addition, he also placed second in both the 100 and 200 yard dash at the 1947 Mid-American Conference championship. His efforts and skill did not go unnoticed as he was named a NCAA All-American in 1947 and 1949. In addition, he was named to the Mid-American Conference First Team in 1947 and 1949 and he captained the Wayne State team in 1950. Wingo rounds out the relay team of Irving Petross, Lorenzo Wright and Buddy Coleman who are all inducted into Wayne State University's Hall of Fame. Wingo is being inducted posthumously into the Wayne State University Athletic Hall of Fame.
