Leon "Toy" Wheeler was an outstanding athlete for WSU back in 1918 when the school was called City College of Detroit. Wheeler competed in football, basketball, and track while attending City College of Detroit.
Wheeler came to Detroit from Danville, Indiana. In 1918 Wheeler quarterbacked the first football team at Detroit Junior College which was coached by David L. Holmes.
Leon Wheeler also accomplished more following his collegiate career. He went on to coach the Harlem Globetrotters and the famed basketball teams at Detroit's Brewster Center. Wheeler was also the Director of the Brewster Center until his retirement in 1945. Wheeler, quite possibly, was the most outstanding Recreational Director and Supervisor in Detroit's history.
He was married for 48 years to Ada Thelma.
Leon "Toy" Wheeler passed away on May 22, 1968 at the age of 70.
