Michael Newsted, a four-year varsity letterwinner in baseball (1998-2001) at Wayne State, has been selected for induction into the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame. Newsted, a graduate of Blissfield High, currently holds the Wayne State career records for games pitched (61), games started (44), complete games (31), victories (24), innings pitched (313.0) and strikeouts (335). He is also the GLIAC all-time strikeout leader after leading WSU in strikeouts all four seasons. No WSU pitcher had ever recorded more than nine complete games in a season until Newsted recorded 10 in three consecutive years (1999-2000-2001). His nine victories in 1999 was one shy of the school mark. He holds two of the top three single-season innings pitched and strikeouts totals. He compiled a 4-1 record as a freshman in 1998 and finished sixth in the GLIAC in saves (five) and strikeout average (7.50). Newsted had 40 strikeouts in 43.2 innings, with only 15 walks. He was also the winning pitcher in the game in which WSU clinched the league title. The following year, he made 12 starts and had 10 complete games while recording a 9-3 mark in 91.2 innings to earn First Team All-GLIAC accolades as well as First Team All-North Central Region honors. He led the 1999 squad in innings, wins, strikeouts (110), starts and complete games. He also led the league in strikeouts per nine innings (10.80) and was third in ERA (3.04). As a junior in 2000, Newsted completed 10 of his 11 starts as was named to the All-GLIAC Second Team. He was third in the GLIAC in strikeouts (79), while leading WSU in wins (5), innings pitched (77.1) and strikeouts. In his senior season, he earned Honorable Mention All-GLIAC honors after compiling a 6-7 record with a 3.95 ERA in 100.1 innings, the most innings ever pitched in school history. He struck out 106 batters while only walking 36. Newsted, who served as team captain, completed 10 of his 15 starts. Newsted was selected as the 1999 Pitcher of the Year for the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate Baseball league as a member of the league champion Michigan Monarchs. A 2003 WSU graduate with a degree in criminal justice, Newsted is currently working for a parts distribution company. He currently lives in Allen Park with his wife Marcia, also a WSU graduate.
