Paula K. Sweeney is the first woman to be elected to the Wayne State Athletic Hall of Fame. She was a member of the Wayne State women's fencing team during the 1941-1942 and 1943 seasons. She was also the captain of the squad during her senior season.

Following her graduation from Wayne in 1943, she joined the Detroit Public Schools and has continued her association with the sport of fencing. From 1941-1962, Paula was the Women's Fencing Champion of Michigan, which covered a period of 15 years. In 1953, she was the captain of the United States Women's Championship Team and she was the U.S. Women's Individual Champion during the same season.

Paula K. Sweeney also served as an academic counselor at Osborn High School in Detroit.
