Robert F. Wingo, another Mumford High School staff member, served as head track coach at Mumford High School. While at Wayne State from 1939-1947, Wingo earned four varsity letters and a freshman award (1939) for head coach, Hall of Famer David Holmes. Wingo ran on the National Championship 1600 meter relay team in 1942. Also that year, he placed fourth in the National AAU final race in the 400 meters. His time was :47.3. Wingo defeated then world indoor record-holder, Bob Ufer, in that 1942 AAU race. As part of a spring medley relay team in 1942, Wingo took second place at the National Indoor Championships at Madison Square Garden. Wingo also won four State Intercollegiate AAU Championships and was a member of the winning mile relay team at the Western Ontario Relays in 1948.
