Men’s Tennis Moves Past Hamilton College 7-2

Orlando, Fla. – The Wayne State men's tennis team wrapped up its time in Florida on Tuesday with hard-fought 7-2 win over Hamilton College. Three singles matches went to three sets and one doubles bout needed a tie-breaker to decide the winner. WSU heads home with an overall record of 6-3.

The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France) and graduate student Britton Steele (Novi, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) improved to 6-1 on the year by defeating Jon Franzel and Andrew Libin 9-8 (7-5) for their fifth-straight win.

However, WSU would find themselves down 2-1 heading into to the singles matches after Hamilton gained victories in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Junior Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) and freshman Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) fell 8-3 in the second flight while freshman Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) and senior Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren De La Salle) lost 8-5 in third doubles.

The Wayne State comeback started with straight-set wins by No. 1 Moulin (6-1, 6-2) No. 2 Steele (6-3, 6-2) and No. 6 senior Roberto Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Preparaforia del Estado de Comitan) (6-1, 6-3). Gomez and Steele have both won back-to-back matches while Moulin extended his winning streak to four matches.

The middle of the WSU lineup secured wins thanks to three three-set victories. In third singles, Ducret rebounded from a 2-6 opening set loss with a pair of 6-3 wins over Jordan Petit.

After winning his first set 6-4, Gamarra dropped the next set to Gregory Kreitzer 4-6 before claiming a 6-0 victory in the third set for Wayne State. Turnbull also split his first two sets 6-4, 4-6 against Michael Moreno before bouncing back with a 6-4 triumph in the deciding set.

The Warriors will start a four-match homestand on March 23 against Ohio Dominican at 12:00 p.m.
