Freshman Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) helped the Wayne State University women's tennis team finish its fall season at 12-0 overall as the Warriors swept three matches (all by 4-0 scores) at the GLIAC Tournament this past weekend in Midland, Mich. Â
She went 5-0, including 3-0 at No. 3 doubles and 2-0 and No. 5 singles. On Friday against Purdue Northwest, she wpn 6-3, 6-0 in her singles match and teamed with Irena van Meer. Her match on Saturday vs. Northwood was unfinished but she and van Meer won 6-4 in doubles. In Sunday's championship match, she won 6-4, 6-2 in the fifth flight of singles and won 6-3 in doubles.
This is the second consecutive year that WSU has been crowned GLIAC Tournament champions and Wayne State's third tournament title for women's tennis under the league's current format. WSU won seven league titles in an eight-year span from 1975-79 and 1980-82 when the regular season and tournament were combined into one championship team.
