Graduate student Luc Warnock (McGregor, Ont. / E.J. Lajeunesse [Northern Illinois]) of the Wayne State men's golf team saved some of his best play of the season for his first GLIAC Championship on Friday through Sunday.
Starting with the Stroke Play Championship, Warnock fired a 143 (-1, 69-74) to tie-for-seventh in the 52-player field. Then facing Grand Valley State's Drew Coble in the Medal Match Play Championship semifinals, the eighth-ranked player in Division II (Clippd Scoreboard), Warnock trailed by two shots with six holes to play before finishing with a three-under 69 to tie and keep the Warriors' hopes alive.
On Sunday in the finals against Saginaw Valley State's Shea Harmeson, Saturday's individual Medalist Honoree, Warnock carded his lowest round of the season (27 total rounds) with a 67 and won the head-to-head by three strokes. In his 23 rounds played prior to this event, Warnock hadn't shot in the 60s a single time with three sub-par rounds, a number he doubled last week alone.
