The Harwell Field project was announced in the summer of 2013 and was unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony on April 18, 2017. Guest speakers included former WSU Board of Governors Chair Sandra Hughes O'Brien, former WSU President Dr. M. Roy Wilson, former WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier, S. Gary Spicer, Sr., longtime friend and attorney for Ernie Harwell, Alan Trammell, and Kirk Gibson.
The facility includes numerous exhibits which pay tribute to Harwell's marriage to Lulu, audio and video of Harwell’s signature calls and moments and the controversial Jose Feliciano national anthem during the 1968 World Series. There are interactive areas where you can listen to other announcer's great calls, watch Ernie's farewell speech, and read letters written to Ernie.
In addition, the building will be open two hours prior to all home Wayne State and De La Salle football games and will remain open through halftime.
Admission is free for all ages.
Parking is available in Lot 50, which is located off Warren Avenue, south of the Matthaei.
