Women’s Tennis Loses To Michigan Tech 5-4

Box Score

The Wayne State women's tennis team lost 5-4 to Michigan Tech as the Warriors attempt for their second three-match winning streak of the season was denied by the Huskies Saturday at the WSU Tennis Courts.

Wayne State will enter the GLIAC Tournament with a record of 7-3 overall and 6-3 in GLIAC play.

WSU was unable to win a pair of tight doubles matches when Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont.) and Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia) lost a close 9-8 (5) match in No. 1 doubles to Nathalia Rondelli and Ploy Suthijindawong while McCall Monte (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) and Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ontario) suffered a 9-7 defeat in No. 2 doubles. Saturday marked the first time in six matches that Monte and Goranskaya were unable to come away with a win for WSU.

Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich.) and Debora Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) salvaged doubles play for Wayne State by winning their sixth straight match. This time the duo won 8-0 over Danielle Stoll and Caitlin Hartley.

Trailing 2-1 heading into singles competition, Wayne State would receive wins from the bottom half of its rotation as Monte pulled out a win in No. 4 singles and No. 5 Correa defeated Stoll 6-1, 6-1.

Bradford blanked Jacqueline Kukulski 6-0, 6-0 in No. 6 singles to get Wayne State to its four points. Bradford has now won her last three matches.

However, Michigan Tech (6-2, 6-2 GLIAC) was victorious in the first three singles flights to ensure its sixth win of the season.

Goranskaya and Vuksanovic both lost 6-0, 6-2 in the second and third singles matches respectively. Gill retired from the No. 1 singles match after dropping the first set 6-0 to Victoria Zhilkina.

Wayne State will look to get back on track on Oct. 24 at the GLIAC Tournament.
