Volleyball Extends Winning Streak To Four At LSSU

Sak Collects Season-High Eight Blocks

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Wayne State University volleyball team (14-2, 6-2 GLIAC) earned a 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-19, 25-16) at Lake Superior State University (1-15, 1-7 GLIAC) on Friday night at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.  It was Wayne State's fourth consecutive win and eighth shutout of the season.

Candis Jenich led the Warriors with 12 kills and a .458 hitting percentage.  Wayne State as a team hit .315 compared to LSSU's .069 percentage.

Lauren Mallast and Sarha Gosselin finished with eight kills and four blocks apiece, while Kate Sak contributed a season-high eight blocks along with five kills.

The Warriors amassed 12 blocks in all, their second-highest total of the year and highest in any three-set match.  Conversely, the Lakers managed just three blocks.

Early in the first set, neither side was able to pull ahead by more than two points until Wayne State, down 14-12, went on an 8-2 run to grab a 20-16 advantage on its way to a 25-21 win.  Sak had four kills and three blocks in the set.

Five straight Warriors points in the second set gave WSU an 18-13 lead, and the two teams nearly alternated points the rest of the way as Wayne State took the set, 25-19.

The Warriors led wire-to-wire in the third, taking the set 25-16.  Jenich posted six of her 12 kills in the final set.

Cydney Biessel collected 33 assists and six digs, while Maureen MacDonald led WSU with eight digs.

Wayne State will travel to Saginaw Valley State for a 4:30 p.m. match Saturday.
