Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision At Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Wayne State volleyball team (14-3, 6-3 GLIAC) saw its four-match winning streak come to an end following Saturday afternoon's 3-1 loss at Saginaw Valley State (12-5, 7-2 GLIAC).

Wayne State won the opening set, 25-23, before dropping the next three (25-13, 25-20, 25-17).  Saginaw Valley State, which is tied with Hillsdale for the best conference record, moved into sole possession of first place in the GLIAC North Division, while WSU remains in second place in the South.

Sarha Gosselin finished with 13 kills, eight digs and three blocks, while Kate Sak reached a double-digit kill total (10) for the first time this season.  Sak also contributed six blocks.

The Warriors out-hit the Cardinals, .268 to .200 in the first set, but SVSU hit .394 or better in the next three.  For the match, the Cardinals hit .336 compared to WSU's .158 clip.

Wayne State had to come from behind to win the opening set, as the Warriors went on a 7-0 run to force set point at 24-22.  Sak finished off the set with a kill for a 25-23 result.

Saginaw Valley State never trailed in the second set and ended it on an 11-2 run.  In the third, a 9-7 WSU lead quickly morphed into an 18-13 SVSU advantage, as the Cardinals took the set 25-20 and grabbed a 2-1 overall lead.  The fourth set ended on a 6-1 Cardinal run, 25-17.

Cydney Biessel totaled 30 assists with seven digs, and Lauren Mallast had seven kills and three blocks.

Wayne State returns to Detroit to host Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech next weekend, Oct. 9-10, at the Matthaei.
