GLIAC losing skid reaches five for Warriors

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Wayne State University volleyball team (17-7, 6-7 GLIAC) was shut out for just the second time this season on Friday night at Ashland University (13-12, 7-7 GLIAC), as the teams split their season series.

Wayne State has lost five straight conference matches, and with this setback the Eagles leapfrogged the Warriors into second place in the South Division.  WSU and Northwood, which blanked Tiffin on Friday, are tied for third with three GLIAC matches remaining.

Candis Jenich (Warren, Mich./Cousino) finished with a career-high 21 digs and added seven kills.  Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) also had seven kills with nine digs, while Kate Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) led WSU with nine kills.

As a team, Wayne State hit .071 compared to Ashland's .239 mark.  Brittany Snider led the Eagles with 16 kills and 20 digs for a double-double.

In the opening set, after the Warriors took a 7-4 lead, the Eagles won the next 12 points and held off a late WSU run to take the set, 25-20.

Ashland's 13-point victory in the second set (25-12) put Wayne State in a 2-0 hole and, despite keeping the third set within three points for the duration, the Warriors never led as the Eagles won the match with a 25-22 result.

Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) totaled 32 assists, and Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) had six kills with three blocks.

Wayne State's trip to Ohio continues with a 4:00 match tomorrow at Tiffin.
