Women's Tennis Defeats Ashland 6-3

The Wayne State women's tennis team started its season with a 6-3 win over Ashland Friday afternoon at Ashland. The victory marks the Warriors' third-straight win over the Eagles. WSU is now 8-2 in season-opening matches since 2000.

Wayne State was able to take two of three doubles matches this afternoon. The tandem of Kristina Goranskaya and McCall Monte defeated Erika Sullivan and Katherine Goudy 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles match. Not to be outdone, WSU's No. 3 doubles team of Debora Correa and Jennifer Bradford bested Ashland's Alexandra Ware and Christa Halicki 8-0.

In singles action, No. 1 Sharon Gill and No. 5 Correa both recorded straight-set victories 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-2 respectively.

After losing her first set 6-4 to Ashland's Erika Sullivan, Goranskaya came on strong in No. 2 singles competition to take the final two sets of the match 6-2 and 6-1. Starting the year in the No. 6 singles flight, Bradford also earned her first solo win of the young season on Saturday for Wayne State in a come from behind victory over Alexandra Ware 0-5, 6-4, 10-3.

WSU's No. 3 Milena Vuksanovic and No. 4 Medha Jha both fell in singles play while Gill and Vuksanovic, Wayne State's No. 1 doubles team, were also unable to capture a win.

Wayne State (1-0) will look to make it a perfect weekend Saturday as they continue GLIAC play against Tiffin at 10:00 a.m. in Tiffin, Ohio.
