Final Stats
The Wayne State women's tennis team continued its hot start to the 2009-10 season Tuesday afternoon as the Warriors defeated Valparaiso 9-0 at the WSU Tennis Courts in a non-conference match. Wayne State's record now stands at 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
Playing in No. 1 doubles, Sharon Gill and Milena Vuksanovic picked up an 8-1 win over Stephanie York and Jackie O'Reilly while Wayne State's No. 2 pairing of Kristina Goranskaya and McCall Monte came away with an 8-4 victory against Katie Bilyeu and Brittany O'Reilly.
The No. 3 duo of Jennifer Bradford and Debora Correa polished doubles play off and gave WSU a 3-0 lead by defeating Stephanie Krebs and Jordan Buterbaugh 8-1.
Gill continued her solid play with a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 1 singles play over Valparaiso's B. O'Reilly and Goranskaya improved her singles record to 2-1 after defeating Buterbaugh in No. 2 singles play 6-2, 6-4.
Vuksanovic was also able to win the No. 3 singles bout for the Warriors in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 against Bilyeu.
The match of the day came in No. 4 singles where Correa was able to knock off York of Valparaiso 7-6, 6-2 in a tightly contested competition.
Wayne State ended the match with No. 5 Monte picking up a 6-4, 6-2 win over J. O'Reilly and Bradford earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory in No. 6 singles vs. Krebs.
WSU will take a break from duel match competition this weekend as six Warriors will compete in the 2009 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships at the University of Indianapolis. The tournament will begin this Friday and continue through Sunday.
