HILLSDALE, Mich. - In a battle between the top two teams in the GLIAC South Division, the Wayne State volleyball team (10-2, 2-2 GLIAC) was dealt just its second loss of the season, a 3-0 result (25-22, 25-13, 25-20) Friday night at Hillsdale (11-1, 4-0 GLIAC).
Wayne State, which boasted the highest team hitting percentage in the conference coming into this contest, hit just .088 compared to .269 by Hillsdale, which avenged a loss to WSU in last year's GLIAC tournament quarterfinal.
A 5-0 run on set point narrowed WSU's deficit to 24-22 in the first, but the Chargers nabbed the next point to take a one-set lead.
It was all Hillsdale in the second set, as the home team cruised to a 12-point victory. The Warriors took a 7-5 lead early in the third, but the Chargers went on a seven-point run and led the rest of the way, winning 25-20.
Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) led Wayne State with eight kills and a .250 hitting percentage. She had five kills and five digs in the third set alone.
Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) totaled five kills and five blocks, while Kate Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) collected six kills and three blocks.
Wayne State's five-match GLIAC road trip concludes Saturday afternoon at Findlay.
