Women's Tennis Drops Match To Northwood 9-0

Warriors lose first match of the season.

The Wayne State women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday as Northwood defeated the Warriors 9-0. Wayne State's record now stands at 3-1 overall and 2-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

Sharon Gill and Milena Vuksanovic, WSU's number one doubles team and reigning ITA Midwest Regional Champions, had their seven-match winning streak snapped by Northwood's Ashley Neumann and Svenja Stephan 9-7.

The Warriors would fair no better in their remaining two doubles matches. The number two pairing of Kristina Goranskaya and McCall Monte lost 8-4 to Darina Berkova and Raphaela Perisic while Jennifer Bradford and Debora Correa were defeated 8-3 by Kim-Jenny Dinh and Charlotte Sevin the third doubles flight.

In a rematch from this past weekend's Regional Semifinal, Berkova defeated Gill 6-2, 6-2 in number one singles. Even with the loss, Gill has won 15 of 19 sets played this season.

Northwood's Neumann won the second singles flight 6-1, 6-2 over Goranskaya while Stephan beat Vuksanovic in the third singles bout 6-2, 6-0.

Both Monte and Correa put up fights in fourth and fifth singles, but ultimately fell 6-0, 6-4 and 6-0, 7-5 respectively. Bradford lost in the sixth flight 6-0, 6-1.

Northwood improved to 4-0 with today's win.

Wayne State will be back in action at 12:30 p.m. on Monday (Sept. 28) against Saginaw Valley State at the WSU Tennis Courts.
