Midland, Mich. -- In its first match at the GLIAC Tournament, the Wayne State women's tennis team defeated Ashland 5-3 on Friday for WSU's third win in as many matches. It was the Warriors fifth consecutive win over the Eagles, dating back to October 26, 2008.

After winning two doubles contests, Wayne State was able to clinch the match thanks to three singles victories.

Leading WSU's doubles charge was the No. 1 team of Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. The duo has now won 24 of their last 25 doubles matches, including seven straight.

At No. 2 doubles, McCall Monte (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Gross Pointe South) and Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) downed Corinne Pasley and Alexandra Ware 8-2. The tandem has been victorious in six of their past seven matches together.

Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) and Jessica Kruczek (Detroit, Mich./Lakeview) were bested by Erika Sullivan and Kira Kotova 8-4.

Gill pushed her match win streak to seven, blanking Goudy 6-0, 6-0.

The other Warrior wins came from No. 2 Goranskaya (6-2, 6-2), who won her fourth straight, and No. 4 Monte (6-0, 6-1).

Both Vuksanovic (6-1, 6-4) and Debora Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) (6-4, 7-5) suffered tough losses at third and fifth singles respectively.
