Midland, Mich. -- In its second match at the GLIAC Tournament, the Wayne State women's tennis team fell to Grand Valley State
5-3. The loss snaps the Warriors three-match win streak and puts them into the third-place match tomorrow against Ferris State.
After winning two contests in doubles, Wayne State was outdueled in singles 4-1.
Leading WSU's doubles charge was the No. 1 team of
Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) and
Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ont./Northview Heights Secondary School) who beat Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout 8-6. The duo has now won 25 of their last 26 doubles matches, including eight straight.
At No. 2 doubles,
McCall Monte (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Gross Pointe South) and
Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) downed Katelyn Schaffer and Alyssa Lucas 8-6. The tandem has been victorious in seven of their past eight matches together.
Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) and
Jessica Kruczek (Detroit, Mich./Lakeview) were bested by Niki Shipman and Lexi Rice 8-3.
Gill pushed her singles win streak to eight, defeating Tara Hayes 6-2, 6-0.
Monte fell to Rice 6-1, 6-3, while Bradford was beat by Allison Fecko 6-1, 6-2.
Both Vuksanovic (6-3, 6-4) and
Debora Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) (6-3, 6-2) suffered tough losses at third and fifth singles respectively.
