DETROIT - The Wayne State volleyball team (10-11, 8-6 GLIAC) snapped a five-match losing streak with a
3-0 victory over Ohio Dominican (7-14, 2-11 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon at the Matthaei.
Wayne State out-hit ODU, .358 to .065, and swept the match by scores of 25-22, 25-9, and 25-17.
Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) led the front row with 12 kills and six blocks. She posted a .500 hitting percentage, second only to
Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) who hit .556 with 11 kills. Kent also contributed seven digs.
The Warriors never trailed in the first set and led by as many as nine until the Panthers closed the gap to 22-21 with a 10-2 run. WSU nabbed three of the next four points.
The middle set marked the second time this season that Wayne State has held an opponent to a single-digit point total.
Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) punctuated an eight-point run with a pair of service aces.
Ohio Dominican took a 7-4 lead to start the third before a 15-3 run turned it decidedly in Wayne State's favor.
Amanda Wetherill (Forest, Ohio/Riverdale) totaled five of her nine kills in the final set.
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) collected 36 assists and moved into seventh place all-time at WSU with 1,754 career assists. She also had eight digs and a pair of blocks.
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) racked up seven kills and three blocks, while
Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) led all players with 16 digs.
Wayne State will hit the road this week to face Ashland on Thursday and Lake Erie on Saturday.
