Midland, Mich. -- The Wayne State women's tennis team (5-4, 5-4 GLIAC) suffered a
6-3 defeat at the hands of host Northwood Wednesday afternoon.
After falling behind 2-1 in doubles play, the Warriors were only able to post two more wins the rest of the way.
Sharon Gill and
Kristina Goranskaya earned their fourth straight doubles win and 21st in the past 22 matches, defeating Nikoletta Kaposzta and Svenja Stephan 8-1.
Both maintained solid play in singles. Gill won 6-2, 6-0 over Stephan and Goranskaya came out on top of a marathon match against Charlotte Sevin 2-6, 7-6, 10-5. Since the ITA Midwest Regional, Gill is a perfect 8-0 in her matches, while Goranskaya is 7-1.
Their teammates,
Milena Vuksanovic and
McCall Monte lost 8-2 to Sevin and Anne-Sophie Goujet in No. 2 doubles, while
Jennifer Bradford and
Jessica Kruczek were bested 8-5 by Ayan Kobayashi and Nicole TenBrink.
Vuksanovic would fall to Kobayashi in No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-2, as would her partner Monte in No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-0 to Goujet.
Debora Correa lost a tough three-set match to Kaposzta 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 in No. 5 singles. TenBrink rounded out the scoring for the Timberwolves, defeating Bradford in No. 6 singles 6-4, 6-3.
This Friday, the Warriors welcome Findlay at 2:00 p.m. It will be the last home match for the five seniors on the squad.
