Painesville, Ohio -- The Wayne State University football team improved to 5-1 overall (4-1 GLIAC) for the second consecutive year with a
28-16 triumph at Lake Erie College (0-6 overall, 0-5 GLIAC).
In a game that featured everything – a quick first half, numerous penalties in the second half and six turnovers (five by the Storm), and Lake Erie garnered 287 yards of total offense in the fourth quarter after compiling 211 yards in the first 45 minutes.
The game started with each team going three-and-out. On LEC's second possession, sophomore defensive tackle
Pat Cecile (Westland, Mich./Livonia Franklin) recoverd a fumble at the Wayne State 40 by Storm running back Patrick Lunney that was caused by senior defensive end
Daunte Akra (Detroit, Mich./Kettering).
The Warriors drove to the LE 25 but after a reception by senior wide receiver
Ed Sanders (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance), he fumbled into the end zone with the Storm recovering.
Lake Erie followed with a 13-play, 83-yard drive with Sam Marcotte connecting on a 34-yard field goal attempt with just 21 seconds left in the first period.
Senior
Stan Thornton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Withrow) returned the kickoff 31 yards to the Warrior 44. On the third play of the drive, sophomore quarterback
Mickey Mohner (Painesville, Ohio/Harvey), playing in his hometown, completed a 24-yard screen pass to freshman fullback
Chet Privett (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren De La Salle). It was Privett's first collegiate reception.
Stefan Terleckyj's (Warren, Mich./Warren Mott) PAT made it 7-3 Wayne State with 14:28 left in the second stanza.
Just past the mid-point of the second period, Lake Erie drove into the red zone but Marcotte's 28-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Akra. On the ensuing play, Mohner found junior wide receiver
Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) behind the Storm defensive backfield for a 68-yard completion. On a third-and-goal from the Lake Erie 15, Mohner hit Sanders with a 15-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds remaining before intermission. Terleckyj's PAT made the halftime score WS 14-3.
WSU freshman running back
Toney Davis (Muskegon Hts., Mich./Muskegon) rushed 13 times for 71 yards in the first half, while Mohner was 7-of-12 for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
Wayne State had a three-and-out on the opening drive of the second half, and Lake Erie drove into the red zone but back-to-back sacks of Storm quarterback Sean Bedevelsky ended the drive on downs.

Zack George (Deshler, Ohio/Patrick Henry) dropped a punt inside the Storm 20 at the 16, plus a holding penalty on Lake Erie moved the ball back to the eight. On the first play, Bedevelsky fumbled with junior safety

On the very next play,
Toney Davis scored on a three-yard run with Terleckyj's PAT giving the Warriors a 21-3 lead.
Lake Erie drove inside the WSU 30 but a fourth down pass was incomplete. The Warriors drove deep into the red zone, with Davis scoring on a two-yard run on the second play of the fourth quarter for a 28-3 advantage. The drive went 71 yards in 10 plays.
The Storm answered with a 10-play, 80-yard drive in 2:18 with Bedevelsky completing a nine-yard touchdown pass to David Romeo on a second-and-goal. After Marcotte's PAT, WSU led 28-10.
After another George punt midway through the fourth quarter, Lake Erie drove inside the Warrior 10 but Thornton intercepted a pass at the goal line and returned it 43 yards. It was Thornton's 16th career interception moving him into fourth place on the WSU all-time list. With the 43-yard return, he moved with 27 yards of Chuck Aldrich's (1979-82) all-time WSU interception return yards record of 373 yards.
Following another George punt, Lake Erie went 85 yards in eight plays with Bedevelsky tossing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Brandon James with 39 seconds left in the contest. The two-point pass attempt was incomplete making the final score – WSU 28, Lake Erie 16.
Davis rushed for a game-high 106 yards on 29 attempts with two touchdowns. Mohner completed 11-of-23 for 215 yards and two scores with no interceptions. Seven different Warriors had receptions with Sanders leading with three catches.
Chris Brown led the Lake Erie rushing attack with 54 yards on 10 attempts. Bedevelsky, who was sacked six times, finished with 36 yards on 21 carries. He completed 22-of-40 passes for 302 yards, but 233 came in the fourth quarter after WSU had built a 25-point lead.

Nick Thomas made 12 tackles as did junior safety
Kenny Loney (Novi, Mich./Walled Lake Western). WSU finished with 11 tackles for loss (six of which were sacks), with
Jeremy Jones having two sacks.
Wayne State will play at home the next two Saturday's – Oct. 16 vs. Ashland and Oct. 23 against Hillsdale.
