WSU Athletics Records 7,429 Hours Of Community Service

DETROIT - The 2009-10 academic year has been a successful one for Wayne State University athletics; not only in NCAA competition, but also in the community and the classroom.

Wayne State athletics broke a school record for community service hours worked for the second consecutive year with 7,429. Team's volunteered with various programs and causes throughout Michigan including Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Local Intervention Network for Kids (LINK), THINK Detroit Pal, Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS) and the Make-A-Wish foundation.

“This is a phenomenal accomplishment and one that has a measurable impact on our community,” Director of Athletics Rob Fournier said. “I want to acknowledge the efforts of our student-athletes and coaches for their hard work. This equates to a championship in community service.”

Men & women's cross country (1,376.5), women's hockey (1,291) and baseball (1,109) all donated over 1,000 hours of their time to various causes throughout the year.

In addition to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships for the WSU softball, baseball and women's swimming teams; nine Warrior squads advanced to their respective NCAA Championship events with six athletic programs matching or surpassing their win totals from 2008-09.

Twenty-six Wayne State athletes were honored as All-Americans in 2009-10, that number has the potential to increase as the softball and baseball seasons are still in progress.

Academically, Wayne State saw 13 of its squad's record above a 3.00 team GPA. For the fall 2009 term, 61 percent of the student-athletes recorded at least a 3.00 term GPA including 23 who had perfect 4.00's. In addition, 75 Warriors earned conference All-Academic accolades.
