MIDLAND, Mich. – The Wayne State University women's tennis team's run at the 2010 Division II NCAA Tournament came to an end Friday in the second round as Northwood was able to defeat the Warriors
5-2. WSU (16-6, 6-3 GLIAC) earned a point in both doubles and singles play.
The Warriors went down 2-0 to the Timberwolves to begin doubles competition with losses at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
In the second flight
McCall Monte and
Milena Vuksanovic suffered just their second loss of the year when Darina Berkova and Anne-Sophie Goujet earned an 8-2 decision. The third doubles match saw
Debora Correa and
Jennifer Bradford fall 8-1 to Kim-Jenny Dinh and Charlotte Sevin.
But Wayne State's No. 1 doubles team of
Sharon Gill and
Kristina Goranskaya would bring the Warriors to within one point of Northwood by claiming an 8-4 victory over Svenja Stephan and Ayana Kobayashi to push the score to 2-1 heading into the singles matches.
Wayne State gained its second point of the day when Goranskaya defeated Kobayashi 6-0, 6-3.
However, the Warriors would lose their matches at first, fifth and sixth singles as Gill (6-0, 7-5), Correa (6-1, 6-1) and Bradford (6-1, 6-2) were all unsuccessful in their respective matches giving Northwood the 5-2 win.
