Warriors Shut Out Storm In Home Opener

Sak totals highest hitting percentage in at least 10 years

DETROIT - In its first home match of the 2010 season, the Wayne State University volleyball team (3-3, 1-1 GLIAC) picked up its first conference victory with a 3-0 win over Lake Erie College (3-3, 0-1 GLIAC) on Friday night at the Matthaei.

The Warriors won in straight sets (25-17, 25-9, 25-22) and out-hit the Storm, .293 to -.145, in a match which took just one hour to complete.

Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) tied her season and career-high with 15 kills, four more than the entire Lake Erie squad. Sak made just one attack error and hit .778, the highest single-match winning percentage in at least a decade.

Wayne State did not trail in the match until Lake Erie won the first two points of the third set. The Storm in fact led for much of the set until, with the score tied at 21-21, the Warriors took four of the last five points to close it out.

Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) contributed six kills, four digs and a pair of blocks. Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) finished with 32 assists and six digs, tying for match-high honors in the latter with Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill), who also had three service aces.

Wayne State will host Ashland tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. in a rematch of last year's GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal at Kates Gymnasium.
