Volleyball Wins Third Straight, Defeats SVSU

Warriors earn first victory over Cardinals since 2005

DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (6-4, 4-2 GLIAC) extended its winning streak to three matches following Friday night's 3-1 victory over Saginaw Valley State (5-4, 3-2 GLIAC) at the Matthaei. It was the Warriors first win over the Cardinals since 2005.

Wayne State grabbed a 2-0 lead (25-19, 27-25) before SVSU forced a fourth set (20-25). The Warriors edged the Cardinals, 29-27, to snap the four-year skid.

Neither team hit for a high percentage, primarily due to effective blocking for both sides as they finished with 15 team blocks each.

Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) matched her career-high with 16 kills and added six blocks and three service aces. Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich), who had 11 kills with five blocks, and Sak combined for 13 of WSU's 18 kills in the decisive fourth set.

Earning her first career double-double, Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) collected 10 kills and 11 digs while contributing three blocks.

After dropping the first point of the match, Wayne State never trailed again in the opening set and led by as many as eight points.

The Warriors jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the second before surrendering 13 of the next 17 points. A three-point run put WSU ahead 20-17, but SVSU battled back to tie it at 23-23.

Wayne State fought off a pair set points, and kills by Sak and Kent clinched the 27-25 win and the two-set lead.

The third set was tied at 18-18 before a series of miscues by the Warriors opened the door for the Cardinals to cut their deficit in half, 25-20.

Down 8-3 early in the fourth, the Cardinals went on an eight-point run before the Warriors won three straight to tie it up 11-11. Keeping the set within two points, Wayne State and Saginaw Valley State each withstood two set points before Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) and Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) came up with a pair of block assists to end the match.

Arends led WSU with eight blocks to go with five kills. MacDonald posted six kills and eight digs.

Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) ran the offense effectively with 45 assists while racking up seven digs and a pair of aces.

Wayne State will host Ferris State at 4:00 on Saturday and Grand Valley State at 2:00 on Sunday.
