DETROIT - Extending its winning streak to four, the Wayne State University volleyball team (7-4, 5-2 GLIAC) battled to a
five-set victory on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei and defeated Ferris State University (6-5, 3-4 GLIAC) for the first time since 1998.
After the teams split a pair of 25-17 results, Wayne State took a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 win in the third set. Ferris tied it up with a 25-22 victory before WSU sealed the win, 15-12, in the fifth.
Each of the last three meetings between the Warriors and Bulldogs have lasted five sets.
Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) led all players with 18 kills and six blocks. She also had a pair of service aces.
Two Warriors finished with double-doubles, including a second in two matches for
Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) who had 11 kills and 10 digs.
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) finished with 43 assists and a team-high 15 digs while also chipping in five kills and three blocks.
Wayne State turned a 9-7 deficit into a 15-10 lead in the opening set, and won seven of the final eight points. Ferris State never trailed in the second, however, and tied it at one set apiece.
Conversely, the Bulldogs never led in the third, as the Warriors regained the overall advantage.
The score was within two points in the latter half of the fourth set, but Ferris State closed it out on a three-point run to force a fifth and deciding set.
Sak totaled four kills and two blocks as the Warriors led by as many as five points and held on for a 15-12 win in the fifth.
Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) and
Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) totaled seven kills apiece, while MacDonald also had nine digs.
Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) and
Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) amassed 14 and 12 digs, respectively.
Wayne State will host Grand Valley State at 2:00 on Sunday at the Matthaei.
