Biessel posts second straight double-double

DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (7-5, 5-3 GLIAC) had its four-match winning streak snapped following a 3-0 loss to Grand Valley State University (7-5, 6-2 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon at the Matthaei.

The Lakers swept the match by scores of 27-25, 25-21, 26-24 in what was largely a closely contested match between two teams each playing their third match of the weekend.

Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) finished with a match-high 12 kills, and Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) posted her second consecutive double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs.

GVSU came out of a timeout down 12-8 and won 12 of the next 17 points to grab a 20-17 lead. Wayne State fought off two set points before falling 27-25.

In the second set, Wayne State took a 6-3 lead before a five-point run made it 8-6 in favor of GVSU. After the Warriors tied it at 10-10, no more than a point separated the two teams until Wayne State took a timeout down 20-18. GVSU won the last three points to claim the set 25-21.

A series of runs in the back-and-forth third set led to Wayne State taking a 24-20 lead. Despite being on the verge of forcing a fourth set, the Warriors surrendered six straight points.

Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) collected 10 kills, four blocks and a pair of service aces. Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) led all players with 14 digs, and Amanda Wetherill (Forest, Ohio/Riverdale) posted eight kills and a pair of blocks.

Wayne State will travel to Findlay on Friday night before hosting Hillsdale the following day as part of WSU's Homecoming.
