AURORA, Ill. - The Wayne State University volleyball team (9-10) went unbeaten at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover, defeating the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (11-11) in
four sets in WSU's last match of the weekend Saturday afternoon.
The teams split the first two sets (25-19, 21-25) before WSU took the next two (25-22, 25-15) to finish 3-0 in the tournament. Wayne State is 8-4 all-time at the Crossover and went undefeated for the second time in three years.
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich), who had 23 kills in Friday's win over UMSL, totaled 24 against the Rangers, the most by a Warrior since Miranda Robison had 25 at Gannon on Oct. 27, 2006. Bulkiewicz also had seven digs, three blocks and a pair of service aces, along with a .440 hitting percentage.
Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) hit .632 with 14 kills,
Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) finished with 15 kills, and
Cydney Biessel (Rub y, Mich./Yale) recorded a double-double with 44 assists and 11 digs.
As a team, the Warriors hit .305, their best percentage since Sept. 11 at Lake Erie (.532).
Wayne State and Wisconsin-Parkside had not met since 2003. The Warriors led for the duration of sets one and four, but the two in between saw a total of 23 ties and 13 lead changes.
Hillsdale comes to Detroit to face the Warriors at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday for “Max the Matthaei” night. Green t-shirts will be on sale for $2.00 and fans can eat free pizza at 6:30 p.m. prior to the match.
