TIFFIN, Ohio - Earning its fifth victory in six matches, the Wayne State volleyball team (11-11, 7-7 GLIAC) defeated Tiffin (5-17, 4-9 GLIAC) in
four sets on Tuesday night at Gillmor Center.
After splitting the first two sets (25-20, 24-26) the Warriors took the next two (25-13, 25-19) to get back to .500 overall for the first time in a month. Wayne State also swept the season series against Tiffin.
Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) and
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) tied for team-high honors with 17 kills. Arends, whose kill total marks a career-high, hit .516 with two blocks. Bulkiewicz had 15 digs to tally her 10th double-double of the season.
Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) hit .429 with 13 kills and six digs. Arends and Ottey's hitting percentages account for two of the five-highest figures by any Warrior this season.
After winning the first set, the Warriors stormed back late in the second to turn a 19-14 deficit into a 23-22 lead. The Dragons were able to eke out a win, however, to tie the match.
The Warriors won 16 of the last 21 points to run away with the third set, and used a seven-point run late in the fourth to take a 19-16 lead before ultimately winning, 25-19.
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) finished with 55 assists, and
Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) collected 21 digs.
Wayne State will play its final home matches of the season Saturday against Ashland and Sunday versus Lake Erie.
