Volleyball Defeats Tiffin In Four Sets

Arends finishes with career-high 17 kills

TIFFIN, Ohio - Earning its fifth victory in six matches, the Wayne State volleyball team (11-11, 7-7 GLIAC) defeated Tiffin (5-17, 4-9 GLIAC) in four sets on Tuesday night at Gillmor Center.

After splitting the first two sets (25-20, 24-26) the Warriors took the next two (25-13, 25-19) to get back to .500 overall for the first time in a month.  Wayne State also swept the season series against Tiffin.

Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) and Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) tied for team-high honors with 17 kills.  Arends, whose kill total marks a career-high, hit .516 with two blocks.  Bulkiewicz had 15 digs to tally her 10th double-double of the season.

Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) hit .429 with 13 kills and six digs.  Arends and Ottey's hitting percentages account for two of the five-highest figures by any Warrior this season.

After winning the first set, the Warriors stormed back late in the second to turn a 19-14 deficit into a 23-22 lead.  The Dragons were able to eke out a win, however, to tie the match.

The Warriors won 16 of the last 21 points to run away with the third set, and used a seven-point run late in the fourth to take a 19-16 lead before ultimately winning, 25-19.

Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) finished with 55 assists, and Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) collected 21 digs.

Wayne State will play its final home matches of the season Saturday against Ashland and Sunday versus Lake Erie.
