DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (11-12, 7-8 GLIAC) lost a
three-set result to Ashland University (11-11, 9-6 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.
Ashland, which had lost eight of its last nine matches entering Saturday, swept the match by scores of 25-20, 26-24, and 25-23. Wayne State remains in third place behind AU in the GLIAC South Division with four matches left in the regular season.
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) led WSU with nine kills and 16 digs.
Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) finished with seven kills, nine digs and three service aces.
With the score tied at 6-6 in the first set, Ashland opened up a seven-point run and led the rest of the way to a 25-20 result.
The Warriors led by as many as nine points in the latter stages of the second set, but the Eagles came back to tie it at 24-24 and grab the next two points.
Trailing 24-20 in the third, Wayne State fended off three match points before a kill from Kate Eckels put it away.
Brittany Snider and Baley Bernthisel led Ashland with seven kills apiece.
Wayne State will face Lake Erie tomorrow in WSU's home finale at 2:00 p.m.
