MISHAWAKA, Ind. - The Wayne State University volleyball team (6-8) dropped a
three-set decision to No. 21 Lewis University (11-4) on Wednesday afternoon at Mishawaka High School.
The Warriors, playing their fourth ranked opponent in the last six matches, were swept by scores of 25-18, 25-19, and 25-21. The Flyers have won six straight including five shutouts.
Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) hit .381 with 11 kills and a pair of blocks.
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) finished with 10 kills, eight digs and two service aces.
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) ran the offense with 31 assists.
After losing the first two sets, the Warriors fought to keep the match alive in the third set, which featured five lead changes and five ties. Down 20-14, Wayne State went on a 5-1 run to force Lewis into a timeout. The Flyers came out, however, to nab four of the next six points for the sweep.
Wayne State will return to Detroit to host Northwood on Friday and Lake Superior State on Saturday in GLIAC action. Friday's match with the Timberwolves will be Dig For a Cure Night, and fans are encouraged to wear pink as the Warriors raise money and awareness for breast cancer research and prevention. Free admission is being offered for Saturday's match to fans who show a ticket stub from the Wayne State-Lake Erie football game.
