BIG RAPIDS - The 2011 season came to an end for the Wayne State University volleyball team (14-14) following a
3-0 loss (25-15, 25-18, 25-8) to Ferris State University (25-2) in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament on Thursday night.
The Bulldogs, the top seed in the tournament, remained unbeaten (14-0) at Ewigleben Arena and extended their overall winning streak to nine. FSU also out-hit WSU, .359 to .000.
Despite the loss, Wayne State has finished with a .500 record or better each of the last four years, qualifying for the postseason every year as well.
Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) hit .300 with 10 kills to lead the WSU offensive effort.
Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) totaled seven kills, and
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) finished with four kills and a team-high 14 digs.
Bulkiewicz ended the season with 402 kills, the most by a WSU player since 1997 (Fawne Allossery - 462).
Ferris State was paced up front by Anne Sutton and Ashley Huntey who finished with 11 kills apiece. Sutton hit .611 with four blocks.
The Bulldogs, who will host the remainder of the GLIAC Tournament, will face Ashland on Saturday.
