DETROIT -- The 2011 Wayne State University football team (8-3 overall, 7-3 GLIAC) had the chance to claim a share of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) title on Saturday but a
43-42 overtime setback to the visiting Findlay Oilers (6-5 overall, 6-4 GLIAC) has put the Warriors post-season fate in the hands of the NCAA Super Region 3 selection committee.
After the WSU defense forced a Findlay punt on the game's opening drive, the Wayne State offense went 76 yards in eight plays with sophomore running back
Toney Davis (Muskegon Hts., Mich./Muskegon) scoring from one-yard out on a third-down play. The big play of the drive was a 44-yard completion by junior quarterback
Mickey Mohner (Painesville, Ohio/Harvey) to senior wide receiver
Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) on a second-and-eight from the WSU 37.
Ray Ballard took the ensuing kickoff 50 yards into Warrior territory and the Oilers answered with a seven play drive culminating in a 16-yard touchdown reception by Seth White from Clay Belton. A key play was Belton drawing WSU offsides on a fourth-and-two.
Wayne State marched down the field and went ahead 14-7 on a two-yard touchdown reception by senior fullback
Matt Maus (Muskegon, Mich./Orchard View) finishing off a six-play, 55-yard drive early in the second quarter.
After each team punted, Findlay knotted the score at 14 on Belton's 49-yard scoring toss to Nathan Morris just past the midway point of the second quarter.
On the Oilers next drive, WSU senior defensive end
Jon Robinson (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) put pressure on Belton forcing a fourth down incompletion at the Wayne State 42.
Mohner completed three passes and the Warriors called timeout with four seconds left before intermission. Burrell was able to make an adjustment on the pass and hauled in a 49-yard touchdown on the last play from scrimmage giving WSU a 21-14 lead at halftime.
Wayne State's first drive of the second half ended in a punt, and the Oilers again tied the score as White had a nine-yard TD reception.
On the third play of the fourth quarter, the Warriors grabbed a 28-21 lead on a seven-yard touchdown run by Davis which concluded a 12-play, 93 yard drive by Wayne State.
Findlay had a third-and-one from the UF 41 on the ensuing drive and Belton went under center, but the snap went to White who found an open Jaryd Brown for a 59-yard scoring pass to tie the game at 28.
The Oilers recovered an onside kick and drove into the red zone, but junior safety
Mazen Jaddou (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) intercepted a fourth-down pass. The Warriors went three and out, but punter
Stefan Terleckyj (Warren, Mich./Mott) launched a 73-yard kick (including the bounce) before Isaiah Ballard returned it 14 yards.
UF took its first lead, 35-28, as Monterae Williams capped off a seven-play, 66-yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown run.
A pooch kickoff resulted in the Warriors starting the ensuing drive at their own 41. On the first play, Burrell took a screen pass 59 yards into the end zone and Terlecky's PAT tied the game at 35 with 2:27 left.
Findlay ran 11 plays following the kickoff but was unable to get into field goal range.
Wayne State had the first possession of overtime and after Mohner scrambled for a first down on third-and-five, senior running back
Josh Renel (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) went around right end for a 15-yard touchdown.
On UF's possession in the first extra session, Williams scored from a yard out and the Oilers went for two with Belton completing the PAT pass to Brown.
