Game two between Warriors and Eagles rained out

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Wayne State University baseball team (24-11, 16-7 GLIAC) lost the first game of a weekend series at Ashland University (25-12, 14-8 GLIAC), 10-0, before game two was canceled due to rainy conditions on Friday afternoon.

Aaron Hilt tossed a one-hitter to improve to 5-1 on the year for the Eagles. He walked three and hit three batters, but struck out two and stymied a Warrior offense which had averaged12 runs per game during its six-game winning streak.

While Ashland had just nine hits against three WSU pitchers, the Eagles benefitted from eight walks and four Warrior errors.

The Eagles, who scored in each of the first five innings, posted five runs in the bottom of the third to take an 8-0 lead. Adam Murphy had a two-run single as part of the big inning.

Murphy was one of three Eagles with two hits, along with Mitch Klein, who drove in four runs and scored twice, and Evan Melendez.

Justin Sylvester (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) pitched three innings in relief after starter Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) was chased in the third inning. Brock Bates (Delta, Ohio/Evergreen) tossed a scoreless sixth inning.

The lone hit allowed by Hilt was a two-out single by Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) in the first inning. The Warriors loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh on a walk and two hit batters, but Hilt recorded the final out to keep his shutout intact.

Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon.
