Baseball Sweeps Sunday Twinbill vs. Dragons

DETROIT -
The Wayne State University baseball team (16-6, 8-2 GLIAC) battled through cold and rainy conditions Sunday afternoon to sweep a doubleheader against Tiffin University (6-17, 3-6 GLIAC), taking three of the four games in the weekend series.

The Warriors won Sunday's first game, 5-2, and took the final game of the series, 12-4.

Wayne State continues conference action next weekend at Northwood.


GAME THREE: WAYNE STATE 5, TIFFIN 2

The Warriors scored four runs in the first inning and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth as eight WSU starters had at least one hit, led by #C.J. Maszal# (Allen Park, Mich.) who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) improved to 3-0 on the year, striking out seven and scattering seven hits in 6.1 innings. Kirk Stambaugh (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) came on to finish the game and earn his first collegiate save.

Wayne State went through its entire batting order in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland), Maszal and Phil Swanson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Stoney Creek) each drove in a run while Tiffin was hampered by three errors.

Tiffin scored an unearned run in the fifth, and added another run on an RBI single by Val Helldobler in the sixth. Wayne State answered in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline).

Pat Curtin (2-4) went the distance for the Dragons, allowing 12 hits and three earned runs.


GAME FOUR: WAYNE STATE 12, TIFFIN 4

Wayne State established a 7-1 lead after three innings, and added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to aid Josh Wedesky (Fowlerville, Mich.) in improving his record to 5-0 on the season.

Wedesky allowed four runs on nine hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out six, one shy of his career-high.

Five Warriors enjoyed multiple-hit performances, including Ryan Buter (North Muskegon, Mich.) who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott), Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland), Swanson and Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) all had two hits apiece and combined to score six runs.

Swanson's two-run single was part of WSU's three-run second inning. Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) had an RBI double and Buter drove in two runs with a base hit in the third.

The Dragons cut their deficit to 8-4 in the fifth on an RBI double by Jordan Chiero and a two-run double by Cory Osborne.

A two-run single by Dalman capped off a four-run sixth inning for the Warriors, who improved to 20-8 all-time against the Dragons.
