Big Rapids, Mich. - The Wayne State University women's tennis team (4-0, 4-0 GLIAC) avenged last season's NCAA Tournament loss to Ferris State (3-1, 3-1 GLIAC) with a 5-4 victory over the host Bulldogs on Saturday.
In a battle of conference unbeatens, the freshmen duo of
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) both played significant roles in the triumph.
Along with erasing a 3-0 deficit in No. 2 doubles to win 8-4 over Tabitha Simpson and Natalie Diorio in two doubles, the pair won decisively in their respective singles matches. Moore bested Melissa Flowers, 6-3, 6-2, while Briand defeated Diorio, 6-1, 6-2.
Redshirt sophomore
Tanya Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and
Haleigh McPeek (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) edged Laurence LeBlanc and Mary Coleman in three doubles, 8-2.
Senior
Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ontario / Northview Heights Secondary School) came away with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ana Jan in No. 1 singles.
Teaming with freshman
Daniela Garcia-Diaz (Cali (Valle, Colombia) / Gimnasio, Britanico) at No. 1 doubles, the duo fell 9-7 to Jan and Flowers.
The Warriors travel to face 15th-ranked Grand Valley State tomorrow at 11 a.m.
