Allendale, Mich. - The visiting Wayne State University women's tennis team (5-0, 5-0 GLIAC) won for the first time since 2007 over Grand Valley State University following a
5-4 upset win over the 15th-ranked Lakers on Sunday.
The Warriors took the first and second doubles flights to grab an early 2-1 advantage, and then, won the top three positions en route to the triumph.
Five of the six singles flights were determined in straight-sets with freshman
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) clinching the match in three singles with a 7-5, 6-2 over Allison Fecko.
Earlier, Moore and freshman
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) defeated Fecko and Alyssa Lucas, 8-6, in two doubles.
Moore is undefeated on the year in both singles (5-0) and doubles (4-0).
Prior to Moore wrapping up the match, freshman
Daniela Garcia-Diaz (Cali (Valle, Colombia) / Gimnasio, Britanico) bested Tara Hayes, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.
Her doubles partner, senior captain
Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ontario / Northview Heights Secondary School) triumphed in her No. 1 singles match with Niki Shipman, 6-2, 6-1.
Garcia-Diaz and Goranskaya tallied an 8-5 victory in one doubles over Hayes and Anne Marie Morin, 8-5.
The Warriors will play in the ITA Regional Tournament this Friday through Sunday.
