PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Wayne State University volleyball team (2-4, 1-1 GLIAC) picked up its first conference victory of the year,
shutting out Lake Erie College (0-4, 0-3 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors, led up front by
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) with 11 kills and five blocks, swept the match by scores of 25-14, 25-5, and 25-17, and out-hit the Storm, .532 to .043.
Jen Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) contributed seven kills and a pair of blocks, and
Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) hit .571 with four kills and five blocks.
The opening set stayed within a point until a 10-3 run by the Warriors gave them a 19-11 lead. Wayne State was dominant in the second set, which was capped off by three service aces in the final four points from
Carlee Hunt (Waterford, Mich./Walled Lake Northern).
Tied at 6-6 in the third, the Warriors went on a 13-3 run to pull away and sweep the match.
Aiding in the efficient offensive effort was
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale), who finished with 31 assists.
Wayne State will play its first home matches of the season next Saturday and Sunday against Ohio Dominican and Tiffin, respectively.
