Volleyball Defeats Tiffin In Three Sets

Warriors earn back-to-back shutouts on Homecoming weekend

DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (4-4, 3-1 GLIAC) picked up its second straight home shutout Sunday afternoon, defeating Tiffin University (1-9, 1-4 GLIAC) at the Matthaei.

Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) hit .412 with seven kills and six blocks.  Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich), who has reached double-digit kill totals in seven of WSU's eight matches, contributed 13 kills as well as eight digs and three blocks.

The opening set was all Warriors as they led for the duration in a 25-12 win.  The two subsequent sets were more evenly contested, but in the second set Wayne State was able to turn an 8-5 deficit into an 18-12 lead on its way to a 25-20 victory.

In the third, Tiffin trailed early but battled back to tie the score at 16-16, and went on to take a 23-21 lead before WSU took the final four points to secure the sweep.

Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) had 32 assists to go with four kills, four blocks and a pair of service aces.  Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) and Jen Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) combined for 13 kills.

Wayne State will hit the road next weekend to face a trio of GLIAC North Division foes - Grand Valley State on Friday, Saginaw Valley State on Saturday and Ferris State on Sunday.
