Warriors Defeat #20 Lakers In Five Sets

Three Warriors earn double-doubles in 3-2 victory

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Wayne State University volleyball team (5-4, 4-1 GLIAC) extended its winning streak to four matches with a 3-2 victory at No. 20 Grand Valley State University (6-4, 3-3 GLIAC) on Friday night.

Wayne State took a two-set lead (25-14, 25-20) before GVSU forced a fifth set (25-14, 25-19).  The Warriors eked out a 15-13 win to secure the overall match victory, their second in three years against the Lakers.

Three Warriors finished with double-doubles, including Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) who had 15 kills, 14 digs and five blocks.  Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) totaled 14 kills and 18 digs, while Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) racked up 42 assists and 19 digs.

Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) contributed 12 kills, and Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) led all players with 22 digs and four service aces.

With just a 9-8 lead in the first set, the Warriors went on a tear, claiming 16 of the next 22 points.  In the second set, Wayne State took a 3-2 lead and held the advantage the rest of the way.

The Lakers battled back, however, as Stacey Catalano led the GVSU charge with 11 kills and eight digs over the next two sets, helping the home team pull even at two sets apiece.

After five ties and three lead changes in the fifth set, Wayne State nabbed the final two points on blocks by Bulkiewicz and Jen Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.).

Wayne State's road weekend continues Saturday at Saginaw Valley State and Sunday at Ferris State.
