Warriors earn first victory of 2011

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Wayne State University volleyball team (1-2) picked up its first victory of the season, sweeping Gannon University (0-3) in three sets (25-20, 25-16, 25-18) on Saturday morning at the UMSL Tritons Classic.

Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) hit .300 and finished with a double-double of 10 kills and 11 digs.  Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) led all players with 11 kills.

There were five lead changes and 11 ties in a closely-contested first set before WSU emerged with a 1-0 lead.  Bulkiewicz totaled six of her 11 kills in the opening set.

Wayne State fell behind early in the second set but, after taking a 9-8 lead, never trailed again in the 25-16 result.

The Golden Knights came out of a timeout down 13-7 and promptly went on a 7-1 run to tie it at 14-14, forcing WSU to call a timeout.  The Warriors regrouped and won 11 of the next 15 points to sweep the match.

Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) paced the offense with 31 assists, and Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) finished with seven kills and five blocks.

Wayne State will wrap up its participation in the Tritons Classic with a 3:00 p.m. match against Lindenwood.
