Midland, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (15-1 overall) extended its winning streak to 14 matches with a 5-0 win over Saginaw Valley (9-7) in the first round of 2012 GLIAC Tournament being held at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
The Warriors grabbed a 3-0 lead after doubles play and wrapped up the triumph with two straight set wins at the No. 2 and 3 singles flights.
Sophomores
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) claimed an 8-4 victory at first doubles, while freshmen
Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) and
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) were 8-3 victors at second doubles. Seniors
Tanya Joseph (Northville, Mich.) and
Jessica Kruczek (Detroit, Mich. / Lakeview) had an 8-6 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Kamenko recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, while Poissant was a 7-5, 6-4 victor at third singles. Both rookies are 16-0 in double match competition.
All the other singles matches are marked unfinished.
Second-seeded WSU will play the winner of Friday's Grand Valley and Hillsdale match in the semifinals.
