Detroit, Mich. - The Wayne State volleyball team (16-11 overall, 10-6 GLIAC) closed out its home schedule Saturday at the Matthaei with a three set sweep of the Walsh Cavaliers (9-14 overall, 6-9 GLIAC). Saturday's match marked the final home contest for the five 2012 Warrior seniors who were honored before the game.
The first set was not going the Warriors way early on as Walsh jumped out to an early lead behind sloppy play from the green and gold. Senior
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich. / Yale) would slow the Warriors down however and get the offense back on track. Biessel's 35 assists on the day led to a flurry of kills by Kristen Bulkewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) and
Candice Ottey (Ajax. Ont. / Ajax) early on to bring Wayne State back. The set featured 15 tie scores and four lead changes before the Warriors took their lone advantage late winning the set 28-26.
The remainder of the day was highlighted by adjustments implemented by coach Phil Nikel's group. The Warriors began to use their size and blocking ability to send the Cavs attacks back into their own end and provide the home team with run after run of points leading to 25-15 and 25-17 wins in the second and third sets.
Bulkewicz led the way with 11 kills on the day while shifting to the back end for much of the final two sets.
Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) led the way for WSU with a .417 attack percentage while
Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.) led the Warriors with six blocks to go along with her seven kills.
Wayne State will head to Ashland on Friday before closing out the regular season with Lake Erie on Saturday.
