Ashland, Ohio -- The Wayne State University volleyball squad (16-12 overall, 10-7 GLIAC) went on the road Friday night and battled Ashland University (22-6 overall, 12-5 GLIAC), who is currently ranked seventh in the Midwest Region, for four sets but the host Eagles prevailed 25-18, 24-26, 25-19, 25-20.
The first set was tied four times, the last at 4-4, before AU went on a 5-0 run to open a 9-4 advantage. The Warriors were able to get within three points just twice (9-6 and 11-8) as the squads split the final six points in Ashland's 25-18 win.
There were seven ties in the second set, including five times in the first 14 points. The Eagles had a 23-17 lead prior to Wayne State converting seven consecutive points, which included five attack errors by AU. After Ashland tied the set at 24,
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) had back-to-back kills to give the Warriors a 26-24 triumph.
WSU held a 9-6 advantage in the third set before the Eagles rattled off eight of the next nine points to grab a 14-10 lead. The Warriors answered with two straight points but that would be as close as they would get as AU ended the set on a 6-3 run.
Ashland scored the first three points of the fourth set and Wayne State was never able to knot the score. The Warriors pulled within one point four times but the Eagles answered every time to claim a 25-20 decision.
Bulkiewicz led WSU with a double-double on 17 kills and 16 digs.
Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.) contributed 10 kills.
Wayne State will conclude the regular-season with a 2 p.m. match on Saturday at Lake Erie.
The Warriors begin GLIAC tournament play on Wednesday at a yet-to-be determined location.
