DETROIT -- The Wayne State men's fencing team earned four medals Sunday at the 2012 Istvan Danosi Open, held at the Matthaei. The Warriors picked up two gold medals, with familiar faces finishing in first at the Danosi Open once again.
For the second straight year, sophomore
Quentin Schneider (Gonesse, France) and senior
Nick Silantyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) were victorious at the Danosi Open. Schneider won the men's foil with a 15-11 victory over sophomore teammate
Hans Kaiser (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) in the gold medal bout.
Silantyev won the men's sabre for the second straight year, cruising to the finals and winning 15-7 over Western Ontario's Colin Lee in the gold medal bout. Freshman
Adam Accica (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) also finished in the top 10 for WSU, placing ninth in the sabre competition.
Sophomore
Steven Kudla (Woodhaven, Mich./Riverview Gabriel Richard) earned the fourth medal, finishing in a tie for third place in the men's epee competition.
Juniors
Darrin Winston (Redford, Mich./Thurston) and
Merlin Chappuis (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) each recorded top 10 finishes in the epee, finishing eighth and 10th, respectively.
