Women's Tennis Edges UIndy 6-3 to Open Spring Season

Warriors win four of six at singles; two of three at doubles to pass Greyhounds

Indianapolis -- The Wayne State Warriors women's tennis team picked up where they left off in the fall, getting the spring 2012 campaign started by defeating Indianapolis 6-3 on the road.

WSU's top doubles pair of Daniela Garcia-Diaz (Valle, Columbia / Gimnasio, Britanico) and Kristina Goranskaya (Thornville, Ont. / Northview Heights Secondary School) defeated Maggie Ashby and Alena Perez-Majul 8-1 to get the Warriors (14-2) started.

At the second singles, Garcia-Diaz used two tie-breakers to defeat the Greyhounds' (2-4) Ashby 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-7).

Anne Li Briand also rallied at fourth singles to defeat Meghan Teunis 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).

"(Freshman) Yahsha Moore's (West Bloomfield, Mich.) win (at third singles) was huge and clinched the match for us," stated head coach Sheila Snyder.  "Because of Yahsha's win, Daniela was able to only play the 10-point tiebreaker at No. 2 singles.  The second doubles tandem of Briand and Moore played great," added an excited Snyder.

The Warriors are off until they face Minnesota State-Mankato in Orlando, Florida on March 8.
