DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (6-3, 1-0 GLIAC) won its conference and home opener Friday night at the Matthaei against Lake Erie College (1-4, 0-1 GLIAC) in
straight sets (25-13, 25-14, 25-16).
Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) hit .375 with a team-high nine kills, while
Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) and
Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron) each contributed seven kills and three blocks.
Wayne State totaled 11 service aces, including six by
Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) who also had nine digs.
The Warriors out-hit the Storm, .368 to -.174, in the first set and led for the duration of a 25-13 result. The next two sets were both initially close, until Wayne State pulled away with a 13-3 run to end the second and a 14-3 run midway through the third.
Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.) finished with five blocks, and
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) chipped in 20 assists and five digs.
Wayne State will host Ashland on Saturday at 4:00.
