DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (9-3, 4-0 GLIAC) remained unbeaten at home and in conference play following a
five-set victory over Saginaw Valley State University (5-7, 1-2 GLIAC) on Friday night at the Matthaei.
The teams exchanged sets (25-20, 20-25, 25-11, 16-25) until the Warriors came away with a 15-11 win in the decisive fifth set to defeat the Cardinals for the second time in the last three meetings.
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) came close to a triple-double, totaling 31 assists, nine digs and a career-high nine kills. She also hit .333 and contributed four blocks.
Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) finished with 10 kills and 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) had a team-high 11 kills, and
Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) led the blocking effort with six.
Wayne State withstood two SVSU runs in the first set and ended it by winning six of the final seven points (25-20). The Cardinals never trailed in the second, however, as they tied the score (20-25).
In the third, the Warriors opened up a 7-0 lead on their way to a 25-11 rout. Saginaw Valley State erased a 7-4 deficit in the fourth with an eight-point run and led for the remainder of the set (16-25).
A 13-7 lead for Wayne State in the fifth was narrowed to 13-11 before the Warriors closed it out (15-11).
Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.), the GLIAC leader in blocking entering this weekend, had five to go with six kills.
Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) had seven kills, and
Jessica DeLeeuw (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) led the WSU defense with 14 digs.
Wayne State will host Lake Superior State on Saturday at 2:00. As part of Youth Day, any youth players wearing their team jersey will receive free admission.
