DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (10-3, 5-0 GLIAC) went undefeated in its five-match homestand, which ended with a
3-0 victory over Lake Superior State University (3-9, 0-4 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.
Wayne State swept the match by scores of 25-17, 25-21, and 25-20 to secure its fifth shutout of the season and its third on the homestand.
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) hit .450 with 12 kills, and
Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.) finished with a .500 hitting percentage and nine kills along with three blocks. The Warriors as a team hit .291 to match their season-high.
A four-point run early in the match gave Wayne State a 7-5 lead and the Warriors held the advantage for the remainder of the set.
Tied at 14-14 in the second, the Warriors went on a seven-point run and withstood a subsequent five-point run by the Lakers to take a two-set lead.
Down by three late in the third set, Wayne State came out of a timeout to win 10 of the final 12 points.
Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) finished with six kills and a team-high 12 digs.
Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) had five kills, and
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) collected 31 assists and three blocks.
Wayne State will be on the road the next three weekends, beginning with a trip to the Upper Peninsula to take on Northern Michigan on Friday night and Michigan Tech on Saturday afternoon.
